Of Hates and Dislikes

Prelude: This is my own opinion…it shouldn’t reflect yours actually…but you’re free tointepret this in any way you wish.

Sometimes I think people should just get this into their heads, or at the very least, understand the degree of the meaning of the word jumping to conclusions of how someone feels about them. What are the three magical words that can cause such unwanted tension? No, it’s not I Love You.

Dislike

Hate

Abhor

Maybe not to the extent of abhor, but hate and dislike are used together – too frequently – such that they become of the same meaning. Hate is too strong a word to be matched with dislike, which is definitely, so extremely tremendously exceptionally utterly much more milder.

The dictionary defines:

Dislike:

  • “To regard with distaste or aversion.”
  • “An attitude or a feeling of distaste or aversion.”

Hate:

  • “To feel hostility or animosity toward.”
  • “To detest.”
  • “To feel dislike or distaste for”
  • “Intense animosity or dislike; hatred.”
  • “An object of detestation or hatred”

Abhor:

  • “To regard with horror or loathing; detest”

To begin with, most things that we claim we hate, we just dislike. It’s simply because this word is too frequently and freely used wrongly, and is by tradition one of the most basic emotions we learn in school, and we will proclaim we are facing when we really are not.

For example, “I hate this movie.” Do you really hate it? Most of the time, we don’t hate it so much that we want to kill it. We simply use the word hate to express a whimsical dislike.

Personally, I make it a must to make sure I use these three words carefully. However, some people, will always seem to fail to comprehend the difference between the three words. Even when the intensity of the situation does not bear such strong sentiments.

Abhor is strong enough in any given situation. You literally loathe or are afraid of the person, such that you want to avoid the person. It really functions essentially as a nuclear weapon, enough to bomb and stain the relationship into pieces, possibly even into your next life. I never use this word, and have no intention to do so in the near future.

Hate requires a reason – not an excuse and it had to be a darn valid one at that – for example, your partner betrayed your relationship, or the person harmed your loved ones. It’s pretty hard to take aback the word when you use the word hate, unlike dislike. An opinion can vary, can swing from end to end, can change over time. A reason, and a valid one, cannot. How can you forgive someone that betrayed your trust? Or harmed your loved ones? Your opinion can change, and you may just withdraw your original opinion of the person. When you use the word hate, it appears to be entirely another case – and it might be to the point that it is impossible to forgive. Since hate is so strong, I wouldn’t want to use abhor.

Dislike is simply the opposite of like. It is a much milder form of hate, and is definitely not a synonym for abhor. Dislike is an opinion, like like, as such, it can go as far as a moodswing, or vary like the weather as I’ve said. This is where it differs. Unlike hate, hate would require a very valid reason and not your opinion.

There are many reasons why you can dislike someone on an individual basis:

  1. How the person speaks/acts/talks.
  2. Differences on certain values in life.
  3. Or you simply just dislike the person, such unexplainable feelings via your gut feeling that cannot be  replaced by words unless the person proves you otherwise later in life.
  4. And many other reasons

When someone says he/she dislikes you, it doesn’t necessarily mean he/she hates you. Whilst it definitely depends on context and the intensity of the situation, the word dislike usually isn’t as strong as the word hate.

Dislike, no matter how unpleasant sounding it is, is part and parcel of life. You can’t expect everyone to adore or love you, there are bound to be people who don’t for whatsoever reason (or actually, sometimes, there might just be none) – get over that, grow up and learn how to deal with it. You cannot, and will never be able to get everyone to be with you.

Get over it. The intensity of the three words are different, use the words in the correct context once and for all and stop misinterpreting others and taking these three words – abhor, hate and dislike – as synonyms because they are not – even though the dictionary says they are, the intensity of the three are different.

Nucleii Chalet 2008

Long overdue. But, whatever – better late than never.

The CCA Chalet this year was from the 20th to the 22nd of November at Coasta Sands. Personally, I never found chalets exciting, nor interesting. It’s simply over hyped. This one isn’t quite an exception either, was boring.

20th December

I’m quite sure I set my alarm at 10am to that I could turn up at 2pm. It didn’t quite work, I only woke up at 1pm and arrived at Coasta Sans at around 4pm. Murphy’s Law came into play on my way there, and I missed all the buses, so the travelling time doubled/tripled.

First thing I did was probably to rent a bicycle, as usual. Cycling is the only thing I’d probably do there. Chris and I rented two bicycles, however one of them was for Daren. $15 for 5pm-10am, inclusive of the locks they gave us.

Daren and I decided to cycle before dinner to give ourselves a warm up and to make us hungry. We cycled to the end of Area 1 of the park, then back. Up some bridge, made a round in Area 2 of the park and back to the chalet.

After that, I went Night Cycling with Daren. Cycled out of the Chalets at about 11pm, came back at about 1am. We cycled back and forth the Chalet several times (I think three), because we simply had to forget something all the time. By the time we got done getting everything, we went to the end of the park, cycled down to the end of the park where the wharves were. Then down to Area 2, down to Pasir Ris Town Park. Made a round there since we decided it was late and it wasn’t wise to attempt to go down to Bedok. Went over to Area 3, then half of Area 4 and back.

We met Almeric and Zheng Yee on our way back and spoke to them and it was back to the Chalet.

The night wasn’t too exciting. Whilst the rest were having Night Activities in the Chalet, a few of us went up to sleep. The chalet was probably a smattering of drink cans by this time. Daren and I wanted to get up at about five to cycle tomorrow. Hogged the whole of the mattress on the floor to myself :D . I didn’t really sleep much, with barely 30 minutes of proper sleep, the rest was really just lying on the mattress. It was quite uncomfortable sleeping there, maybe because, it’s a chalet. I quite had peace in the room till about 4am, when the few of them decided to walk in and sleep right below my leg. I could have kicked them in the face, but never mind, folded my legs and stayed there till about five.

21th December Maybe I should have moved this heading above

Woke Daren up at five. Got prepared, and we were out by about 5:40pm. Having being undecided on where to cycle to, I thought it would be nice to see the sunrise at Changi, since I barely have any mornings to the sunrise. It was an approximately 7 kilometer ride there and back. 14km on the bicycle for casual, non-frequent cyclists like us is quite a distance, and was great for morning exercise.

Cycled along the park connectors once we got out to the main road, all the way to Changi Village – or more specifically, Changi Coast Park.

The trip was quite eventful. At 6am, there is barely anyone nor any cars on the roads. On our way back, it was getting packed. I took some pictures along the way when the traffic lights were not complementing us, not very fantastic ones because of the lighting and my camera, especially me not being some professional photographer. Even though traffic was sparse and we could have jaywalked jaycycled, we decided not to.

This was taken at 6.24am.

We rode along, then met another junction barely a few minutes later at 6:28am or so I think. It could have just been the same junction because I know we spent a long time waiting at the traffic lights, I’ve no idea…honestly can’t remember.

I didn’t take any photos after that. Those familiar with the area should know that it’s all restricted area after this, with the airbase nearby and stuff. Not willing to take the risk ;) .

The uphills there seemed more tiring than the uphills back. When it went downhill, it was a breeze. We barely sweat on our way there and back.

We reached Changi Village at about 6:50am. Almost an hour after we started. Quite a good timing, considering the pace we were cycling at. We made a round at the park there, then went back to the bridge to take pictures and rest. I took pictures of the surroundings, and of course, the sky, as time progressed. I missed the shots when the planes were just in front of us and I could take it with the backdrop of the beautiful sunrise. Anyway, I shall let pictures and captions do the talking.

After staying there for about 20 minutes, we decided to get Nasi Lemak from the nearby Hawker Center before we went back. It was an exhilarating experience trying to cycle with a packet of food on the handle of your bicycle ;) .

The trip back took about the same time. At some points where we thought we would need to dismount to push the bike on our trip back, we didn’t, and I’m proud of that! :) . We took the new road that was still under construction on our way back, I would have took that route out, but it was pitch black, no lighting. One of the aunties actually commented that we were smart to use this shortcut :D .

I spent the rest of my day lying on the bed later. Other than going to return the bicycle, I didn’t really move much till lunch. The other guys went off to Wild Wild Wet, which I wasn’t too keen on going. I walked around with Jie Qi before he went back to the chalet, leaving me alone. Called up Rahu who agreed to keep me company while I was so bored (i.e. entertain me) :D . Haha!

Jie Qi and I had ice cream at Geláre at uh, 11am.

This might not have been the most fantastic idea, but who cares! I sat around with Rahu later, watching him eat his Lemon Chicken Cutlet or something, while I sip on my cup of Barley. We chit-chatted about many random things, then met some of his neighbours/friends who appeared out of nowhere. He’s really famous there, I suppose.

I went back to the Chalet at 2pm, slept, and slept even more before I left at 6pm because I was so not going to stay another night, and stay for another BBQ (goodness, what were they thinking? BBQ again?!).

The bus ride back was quite eventful. Took the long way about so I could sleep enough more. 5 took over an hour to reach Thomson Road from Pasir Ris, then took 851 home from there.

That’s all about the Chalet! Overall, I liked the cycling. The rest was horrible – never liked Chalets, anyway.

Huge backlog of posts…still have Malaysia on Saturday and the happenings today…then I’d predict there’ll be another one to write tomorrow.

What is a Base?

As a sequel to “What is an Acid?“, we now have:

What is a base?

Bases are all those pesky little kids out there asking for presents (protons – H+). Now as we all know, some kids are greedier than others. Weak bases are those normal, unspoiled kids who will take a present (H+) if Santa gives it to them. Strong bases like sodium hydroxide (NaOH) are those pesky little spoiled brat kids who take every single present (H+) they can, and are even willing to steal from Santa (weak acid) if he’s being cheap!

Why didn’t I see such Chemistry Tutorials before my exams? :x
